This picture of the 5th Battalion Drums and Bugles was taken outside the door of Clifton Museum in Rotherham during WW1. Little did these soldiers know that 100 years later this building would become the museum of the York and Lancaster Regiment.
A variety of badges can be seen including the Drummers badge worn on the right arm. The wearing of the Imperial Service badge by one of the soldiers on the back row would indicate that this photograph was taken during WW1.
Of particular interest, is the 2 soldiers on the back row who are wearing collar badges in their caps. One soldier is wearing a left facing badge and the a right facing badge!
