John George Edmund Rideal wearing Full Service Dress and his Home Service Helmet as a Lieutenant around 1912. Rideal started his territorial service in 1910 as an Officer in the 5th Battalion based in Barnsley and retired in 1936 as a Lt Colonel.
He served throughout World War 1 firstly as 5th Battalion Machine Gun Officer and then in various machine gun appointments as 148th Infantry Brigade Machine Gun Officer, OC 63rd Company Machine Gun Corps and then as 37th Divisional Machine Gun Officer. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Order and was Mentioned in Dispatches 3 times.
He joined the Home Guard in World War 2 and during his life, he was a prominent member of the community in Barnsley.
